Douglasville’s own Tyreke Thompson has been nominated for the GA Music Awards in the Youth R&B/ Hip Hop category.
Thompson, 16, is known for singing the National Anthem for “September to Remember” at the courthouse and for the city of Douglasville on Flag Day.
He also has a blossoming acting career; he was recently cast in “Miss Winn’s Garden” and has an agent.
Thompson and his mom Latosha said his recent successes have been a long time coming.
Thompson began talking about singing and acting at the age of 3. He said he knew he was destined to be an entertainer at the age of 10.
Thompson credits the late Michael Jackson as his major musical inspiration.
“Right after Michael Jackson died, we watched his funeral on television,” Thompson said. “I started listening to his music and singing. I was imitating him, but my mom really saw that I could sing.”
On competing in Douglasville Idol, he said: “It was a great experience. I enjoyed myself and it was an honor to be there.”
This isn’t Thompson’s first time attending the GA Music Awards — he opened for the show last year.
What a difference a year can make, as this year he will partake as a first-time nominee.
“It’s an actual honor and it warms my heart that they even had me in mind,” Thompson said.
Latosha Thompson, said she was “over the moon” about the nomination.
“I was totally ecstatic about it,” she said. “He's worked hard and to be nominated for such a prestigious award ceremony is huge. We are going to make Douglasville proud.”
As far as his future is concerned, Thompson sees no change of career in sight. In fact, he’s only just getting started. He says he is striving for improvement in all facets of his career.
“I see me doing exactly what I am doing just more successful. Performing everywhere just on bigger stages and in bigger movies … making my family happy and creating a better life and way for my family and household,” Thompson said.
His current goal? Nabbing a role on the popular Fox network show called “Empire” starring Taraji P. Henson, Terrance Howard and company.
“That show is very good … it’s great. If they are ever looking for another kid, I would go in a second. I would instantly audition,” Thompson said.
