A Douglasville woman is facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly throwing her puppy across the room during a domestic dispute.
Meagan Cheri Leavell, 26, of Douglasville appeared in Douglas County court Aug. 4 charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and battery under the Family Violence Act. Leavell remained in jail Tuesday afternoon with no bond. The charges stem from a March 10 incident that occurred at her residence on Parkway Drive.
According to Police Capt. J.R. Davidson, Leavell and her live-in boyfriend were arguing when she picked up the 13-week-old puppy named Duchess and then threw the dog across the room.
“It hit a wall and suffered brain damage,” Davidson said.
According to the report, Duchess was taken to Kay Animal Hospital for treatment. The hospital wouldn’t release details on the puppy’s condition citing patient privacy laws, but she is reportedly doing fine now.
Duchess belonged to Leavell and her boyfriend, according Davidson. The couple had been living together for four years. Information on what led to the assault against her boyfriend wasn’t available Tuesday afternoon, but he reportedly suffered some cuts and scratches.
While the animal cruelty warrant was taken out in March, Leavell had been in Cobb and Clayton counties on unrelated warrants, according to Davidson.
