Throughout the community, strains of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" will ring out on Monday as a number of churches and other organizations will lead the celebration of the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the day set aside for a Day of Service.
New Mountain Top Baptist
“Strength to Love, Courage to Act” will be the theme of New Mountain Top Baptist Church’s annual MLK Day service on Monday at 1 p.m. in the main sanctuary of the church located at 7822 Connors Rd in Winston.
Dr. A. Reginald Litman is the senior pastor.
The Honorable Magistrate Judge Barbara Caldwell will deliver the keynote address. The service will feature a presentation by the youth based on famous quotes by the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Music will be performed by the Voices of New Mountain Top Choir.
Dorothy Sparks, who is coordinating the service this year, said this is an annual event in the community, going back for many years.
“I think it is going to be a powerful service and we want as many people as possible to come celebrate with us,” she said. “All are welcome.”
Mt. Prospect Baptist
The annual ecumenical service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held Monday at Mt. Prospect Baptist Church, 133 Thomas Dorsey Dr. in Villa Rica. The pastor is Dr. James E. Potts.
Everyone is invited to attend a complimentary dinner at 6 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m., which features pastors from several churches in the Villa Rica area, including host church Mt. Prospect.
The message will be delivered by the Rev. Timothy D. French, pastor at Beulah Baptist Church in Macon.
Golden Memorial UMC
The youth ministry “GY4L” Golden Youth 4 Life, will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Monday at 10 a.m. at Golden Memorial United Methodist Church, 6903 James Simpson Ave. in Douglasville.
The theme of the program is “Leading by Example.”
The guest speaker will be Douglas County Superior Court Judge, the Honorable Cynthia Adams.
The Rev. Dr. Gregory S. Williams is pastor at Golden Memorial UMC.
MLK Day of Service Work Day
Sweetwater Creek State Park will hold a MLK Day of Service Volunteer Work Day on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Volunteers and park staff will work to maintain the park’s trails and pick up trash around the lake as well has helping with various projects.
Although gloves and some tools will be provided, volunteers are asked to bring hand pruners, loppers, if possible and water. Sturdy, closed toe shoes are required. Registration is encouraged by calling 770-732-5871. Parking fee is $5.
The state park is located at 1750 Mt. Vernon Road in Lithia Springs.
The city of Douglasville, Douglas County government offices and the Douglas County School System will be closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
