Officials are trying to locate the next-of-kin for a homeless man who was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday.

Douglas County Deputy Coroner Wayne Rogers identified the man as 65-year-old Rene Osman Ruiz.

Ruiz was walking in the travel lanes of Maxham Road in eastern Douglas County when he was struck and killed from behind, according to Rogers. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The last known address for Ruiz was in Temple, Florida, Rogers said.

"We have no next-of-kin, and that's the problem," said Rogers. "We have got to make a decision how to take care of him and we would prefer to let the family take care of whatever needs they desire."

Rogers said he has 72 hours from the time he publishes the notice about the death to contact any family before the decision turns to him and the county.

"It's a sad circumstance where we don't have any information to go on," said Rogers. "We don't know anything about him."

Rogers said the driver of the vehicle who hit Ruiz is not facing any charges because of the way the accident took place.

Anyone with information about Ruiz or his family is asked to call Rogers at 404-667-2893.
