Two suspects have been arrested and charged with robbing the Bank of the Ozarks on Hospital Drive in Douglasville on Nov. 3 and a third suspect remains on the run, police said Thursday.
A 16-year-old male was arrested Nov. 9 at his home in DeKalb County where he was found with a large amount of cash, Douglasville Police Maj. J.R. Davidson said.
A 17-year-old male was arrested Nov. 8 at the school he attends in DeKalb County. Davidson said the 17-year-old had a 9mm pistol, cash and marijuana when he was arrested at his school.
Both suspects were arrested by detectives with the Douglas County/Douglasville Major Case Unit. Davidson said both suspects have been charged with armed robbery and that more charges are likely. He said the 16-year-old is being charged as an adult.
Both suspects have made their initial court appearances where their bond was denied by a Douglas County judge, Davidson said.
Davidson said authorities are not releasing the names of the two male suspects “because there are other bank robberies they’re suspected of in other jurisdictions.”
The 17-year-old, who is being held in the Douglas County Jail, acted as an accomplice with 25-year-old Nilsa Marie Urena, who remains on the run, Davidson said.
The 16-year-old, who is being held in a Youth Detention Center, “acted as a lookout and the driver,” Davidson said.
Davidson said Urena and the 17-year-old male entered the Bank of the Ozarks together and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
“She had a device in her hand that she announced was a detonator,” Davidson said of Urena. “(The 17-year-old) assisted in taking the money — basically he was there with her.”
Davidson said Urena purchased an airplane ticket from New Jersey to Panama around the time of the Douglasville robbery but never used it.
Davidson said Urena is not from the metro Atlanta area. Pittsburgh TV station WPXI reports that Urena may have ties to Pennsylvania.
Davidson said authorities believe Urena was working with the two male suspects who are now in custody robbing a series of banks around metro Atlanta.
Authorities said previously Urena was suspected of robbing a credit union in Grayson about two hours before the robbery in Douglasville.
Police say Urena unsuccessfully attempted to rob a bank in Stone Mountain Oct. 30, but she successfully robbed a bank in Ellenwood later that day.
Urena is described by authorities as about being about 5-foot-7, and about 145 pounds.
Urena was wearing all black, including black gloves, black boots, and a dark-colored messenger bag during the Douglasville robbery, according to the FBI, which is assisting on the case since multiple banks are involved.
Anyone with information about the Urena and her whereabouts is asked to contact the Douglasville/Douglas County Major Case Unit at 770-949-5656.
