In the early morning hours of March 6, 2018, reveille bugles sounded and John Allen (Pick) Forrest reported for eternal duty. John made a peaceful transition at home after an extended illness. He was 95 years, 8 months, and 18 days of age.
John was born on June 16, 1922 in Birmingham, AL to Hugh Matthew Forrest, Sr. and Blanche White Forrest. He was part of a large and loving family of five brothers and two sisters.
He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, World War II, and the Vietnam War, and honorably retired in 1973, after thirty (30) years of service. After twenty (20) years of Civilian Service, he retired as a Training Specialist with the Navy at Cecil Field (Jacksonville, Florida). John devoted his retirement years teaching youth bowling, evangelizing through church prison ministries and supporting various religious activities in Jacksonville, FL and Douglasville GA.
During his WWII European tour, he was blessed with his first daughter, Maria R. Boyd. After returning to the USA, he married Paralee Alexander (deceased) in 1947. From that marriage two daughters were born, Johnnis F. Tillman (Wesley) and Petrine J. Booker. John married Addie Bowden in 1972 and added three stepchildren Ronald Bowden, Michael Bowden (Joan) and Vernita B. Lockhart (Alfred) to create a happy and tightknit family group.
He is survived by his children, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grands, 3 great-great grands and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends.
The Celebration of Life services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on March 15, 2018 at Gus Thornhill Mortuary, 1315 Gus Thornhill, Jr. Dr., East Point, GA 30344, followed by interment at The National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, expressions of kindness may be sent to Heritage SDA Church/Pathfinders, 6969 Hwy 5, Douglasville, GA 30135.
