The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said a Temple man has been arrested after a 14-year-old girl was shot and wounded early Thursday morning.
Dustin Sheffield, 24, has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of methamphetamine and violation of probation with existing warrant.
The shooting occurred in Villa Rica.
According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a shooting on Ridgeside Drive around 2 a.m. on Thursday. When officers arrived, they found the girl, who had been shot in the leg. Deputies gave first aid until an ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital.
The victim was believed to be a runaway and that she might have been accidentally shot during a dispute between Sheffield and another person.
“At the moment this is still under investigation,” said Capt. Jeff Richards. “Sheffield could potentially receive additional charges for aggravated assault, or reckless conduct.”
Richards said that the victim was still in the hospital but that her injuries were not life-threatening.
