It was a win nearly one month in the making, but it proved to be a critical victory for the Villa Rica High School boys' basketball team on Wednesday evening.
Having to travel over an hour to Rome to play the final 4:42 of a suspended game due to a gas leak on Jan. 6, the Wildcats finished off the Wolves for a 54-46 triumph.
J.J. Franklin led the offense with 14 points, followed by Latrell Swanigan with 12.
On Tuesday night, Villa Rica (20-1, 13-1 Region 7-AAAAA) won a 67-60 road contest over Paulding County, where Swanigan poured in 19 points, while Franklin added 18, Micah Hodges posted 12 and Phillip Zachery chipped in 10.
The Wildcats face Rome again — this time in a full, 32-minute affair — on Friday for Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. and then wrap up the regular season with a weather make-up against Hiram on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 8 Haralson County girls 52, Calhoun 21: The Rebelettes (20-2, 9-2 Region 6-AAA) completely shut down the Lady Jackets in a sub-region romp, as senior point guard Alexis Boykin led all scorers with 29 points, while Tori Causey and Indiya Smith added eight points apiece.
Haralson County closes the regular season by hosting rival Bremen on Friday night at 6.
LaGrange girls 51, Central 32: The Lady Lions (14-9, 6-5 Region 5-AAAA) ran into the No. 1 team in the region in a weather make-up. The Lady Grangers (15-9, 11-0) remained perfect in league play behind the 19-point decision.
Central returns home to host Sandy Creek on Friday in the regular-season finale.
LaGrange boys 61, Central 51: The Grangers (17-9, 7-5) closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 29-23 lead into the break and held off the Lions (9-14, 1-10) in the second half for the double-digit victory.
Central plays host to No. 4 Sandy Creek on Friday night at 7;30 back in Carrollton.
