A pair of players from the county found their way onto a couple preseason all-state teams that have been recently released by media outlets.
Alexander defensive back Aaron Casey and Douglas County punter Diego Huerta were named to both the RecruitGeorgia.com and the Georgia High School Football Daily preseason all-state team in Class AAAAAA.
Casey committed to play at Indiana last month after receiving several offers.
As a junior last season for the region runner-ups, Casey finished with 84 tackles, including a tackle for loss. He also had three interceptions and seven pass breakups. Casey, who also plays on the school’s basketball team, had a fumble caused and fumble recovery.
Huerta, a sophomore, averaged 39.3 yards on 25 punts last season. His longest punt covered 58 yards and placed five punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
Also named to the GHSFD preseason team from Region 5-AAAAAA was Mays linebacker Antonio Grier. In addition, Mays running back Armis Stokes made the RecruitGeorgia.com preseason team.
Last season, Grier was chosen the region’s defensive player of the year after recording 47 tackles in eight games with four tackles for loss. He also had two sacks and an interceptions in addition to three fumble recoveries and four caused fumbles.
On special teams, Grier had three blocked punts and a blocked field goal.
Stokes rushed for 634 yards on 131 carries and 15 touchdowns last season for the Raiders, who won the region championship. Mays reached the quarterfinals were it lost 28-21 to Tucker.
Alexander will scrimmage Villa Rica next weekend and open the season on the road at Allatoona on Aug. 25.
Douglas County scrimmage Grayson on Aug. 18 at home before opening the regular season against Lithia Springs on Aug. 25 at home.
