MACON - It was a reverse role for the Alexander Cougars at the Class AAAAAA team dual championship on Saturday.
The Cougars finished runner-up to Richmond Hill at the Macon Centreplex. Alexander was the defending state champion coming into the three-day tournament after finishing as area champion.
Last season, the Cougars finished as area champs but atone for it by winning the state title.
Alexander got wins from Chandler Cadman, Little Nelson, Vinnie Ferrara, Andre Burton and Gabriel Santiago but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars fail 37-26 in the finals.
The Cougars had pretty much cruised into the finals with wins over Greenbrier (68-11), Dacula (47-18) and Valdosta (39-18) before Saturday’s loss.
Alexander has two weeks before the Area 5-AAAAAA Traditional Championship at South Paulding. The Cougars will be trying to qualify as many wrestlers for the Sectional meet, which it will host on Feb. 2-3.
This season’s state finals will be on Feb. 8-10.
Alexander also won the traditional championship last season.
The Cougars have their final home match on Wednesday against North Atlanta and Paulding County when they observe Senior Night.
In cruising to the finals, the Cougars won 20 matches by pins. However, it didn’t get any during the finals against Richmond Hill.
Richmond Hill advanced through the brackets with wins over Chattahoochee (67-8), Lee County (66-6) and Creekview (40-12) before Saturday’s championship match.
This was Richmond Hill’s first state title in either the team dual or traditional championships.
