MACON - Alexander took third at Saturday’s Class AAAAAA Traditional Tournament in Macon.
The Cougars had six wrestlers to place during the three-day tournament at the Macon Centreplex.
Richmond Hill, which won the team dual title last month, also captured the traditional title with 153.5 points. South Paulding, which finished runner-up to Alexander at area, was second with 124 points. The Cougars amassed 122 points to finish third with Dalton taking fourth at 114 points and Creekview rounding out the top-5 with 105 points.
Seniors Vinnie Ferrara, DeAndre Burton and Zayd Ansari took home third place finishes.
Senior Little Nelson was fourth and junior Zach Loner was fifth. In his first state tournament, freshman Dawson Mathews was sixth.
Ferrara, who wrestled in the 126-pound division, won a 4-3 decision over Gary Speed of Grovetown. Ferrara finished the season with a 42-8 record.
Burton pinned Jack Locke of Creekview for his third place finish in the 160 weight class.
Ansari won a 4-2 decision over Kamdyn Munro of Richmond Hill in the 138 class.
Nelson lost 5-4 to Jakeem Littles of Richmond Hill in the 152 class to finish the year at 46-6 overall.
Loner defeated Corbin Lang of Apalachee, 6-2, to finish fifth at 220.
There were some high expectations coming into the season surrounding Mathews, who was a Greco All-American by placing fourth at the national championship in Atlanta this past June. He wrestled in the 160-pound division.
Mathews, who attended Mason Creek Middle, benefited from a new county rule that allowed eighth-graders to practice on JV squad last school year.
Alexander won both the traditional and team dual last season in Macon.
