Derrick Mahone/Douglas County Sentinel Alexander's Chandler Cadman pins his opponent from South Paulding in the Area 5-AAAAAA Team Dual Championship on Saturday.

The only thing that was missing from Alexander’s wrestling resume last season was an area team dual championship.

Alexander lost in last season’s Area 5-AAAAAA Team Dual Tournament to South Paulding in the championship match. However, the Cougars would get revenge by defeating South Paulding in the state championship match in Macon a week later.

The Cougars would go on to win both the area and state traditional championship later that month.

But on Saturday, Alexander defeated South Paulding 49-24 in the area team dual championship to secure another berth into the state title.

Alexander defeated New Manchester 79-0 in the semifinals earlier in the day.

“We definitely felt good about our chances coming in, and I thought we wrestled really good,” Alexander coach Sean Moistner said. “We knew South Paulding would wrestle tough, and they did. We had some matches that didn’t go our way but we will have to see the next time.”

The next time is Thursday in the opening round of the Class AAAAAA Team Dual Championship in Macon.

Immediately after clinching the area championship, the Cougars thoughts turned to Macon.

“We don’t look at it as defending our title but going for another championship,” senior wrestle Little Nelson said. “Winning the area is very special because we loss some good wrestlers coming into the season. It is important that we had some new ones to step up and got the job done.”

Nelson called winning area a “confidence booster” as the Cougars prepared for the state championship.

“I’m thinking that this will lead to some good things,” Nelson said.

“It’s been a long season with a lot of practices,” Cougars senior DeAndr Burton said. “We saw where our hard work has paid off. Everything that the coaches have been telling us has come true.”

Moistner said one of the keys to Saturday’s championship was some of his younger wrestlers. Because of graduation last spring, Alexander counted on several new wrestlers to fill the void.

Moistner praised the efforts from freshmen Dawson Mathews and Jessie Martin and junior Reid Rogers in helping with the title.

“They have stepped up,” Moistner said. “Everybody knows what guys like Little, Vinnie (Ferrara) and DeAndre can do. These other wrestlers deserve some recognition.”
