There were many spectacular players in Region 5-AAAAAA this season, but one stood out among the rest.

Douglas County senior Braelen Oliver was selected the region’s player of the year by the coaches this past week.

Oliver, a 220-pound linebacker/running back, headline the all-region team that has been released.

Mays linebacker Antonio Grier Jr., was named the region’s defensive player of the year while Langston Hughes running back Christian Royalston received top offensive honors.

“This is definitely a big accolade for me,” Oliver said. “It not only recognizes what I did on defense, but also how I played on offense and special teams. It just shows the type of hybrid player that I can be.”

Helping the Tigers to a region runner-up standing and a 10-2 record, Oliver led the defense with 164 tackles.

He had 14 tackles for losses and five sacks and an interception.

Offensively, he had 355 total yards with one receiving and four rushing touchdowns.

“Our region has a lot of good players, and it was one of the toughest in the state,” Oliver said. “To get this honor is really big.”

Also making the all-region on the first team from the Tigers were running back Uriah West, wide receiver Dariyan Wiley, and offensive linemen Deondre Harvey and Lawrence Lagrone.

West led the region with 1,496 yards and 14 touchdowns despite missing three games with an injury. Wiley, who will play in this month’s Rising Senior Bowl, had 392 yards and four touchdowns.

Alexander senior Mason Wood was named to the first team at quarterback while teammates Miciah Randolph and Jalen Morgan were the other wide receivers.

Wood passed for 2,283 yards and 20 touchdowns with only five interceptions. He also rushed for 315 yards and eight touchdowns.

He has been invited to play in the Florida vs. Georgia All-Star Game in January at Southern Crescent Stadium in Riverdale.

Cougars offensive lineman Spencer Myers garnered first team honors.

New Manchester running back A.J. Taylor was the lone Jaguar player named to the first team.

The Tigers had three players - Mataio Soli (defensive line), Josh Slay (linebacker) and Charles Gadie (cornerback) to make the first team.

Soli and Slay will join Wiley at the Rising Senior Bowl later this month.

Alexander senior Aaron Casey was named to the first team by the coaches.
