Special Photo/Reggie Davis Chapel Hill junior Danielle Melilli won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events at the Class AAAAA-AAAA meet on Saturday at Georgia Tech.

ATLANTA - Chapel Hill junior Danielle Melilli finished high at the Class AAAAAA-A Swimming and Diving meet in the freestyle events on Saturday.

Melilli was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal-best of 24.05 seconds and followed that with a fifth place finish in the 52.51 100 freestyle race.

“I was very surprised because I didn’t feel that I was going that fast,” Melilli said. “I looked up at the clock and saw that I won. I’m really proud of myself because I put in a lot of work.”

She finished first among swimmers in Class AAAAA-AAAA in both events.

New Manchester sophomore Michael Tappler had a time of 54.75 seconds to finish 39th overall in the 100 butterfly event.

Melilli said that winning the 50 event give her confidence going into the 100 race.

“I was definitely ready after winning the 50 event,” Melilli said. “I thought I had trained well and it really showed.”
