The Douglas County Tigers climbed to No. 4 in the final Class AAAAAA regular-season Georgia Sports Writer Association poll as the playoffs are set to begin this weekend.
Douglas County was No. 8 in the previous week’s poll but jumped four spot to No. 4 in the poll that was released late Monday. The Tigers are tied with Northside-Warner Robins at No. 4.
Tucker is ranked No. 1 and Mays, the only school the Tigers lost to this season, is at No. 2.
This is the highest the Tigers have been ranked since 1972 in the GSWA poll, when they were No. 3 in the Atlanta Constitution poll and No. 4 in both the Atlanta Journal and GSWA poll.
The Tigers take on Dalton at home on Friday in the first round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs. Dalton dropped out the final poll as last week’s regular season final loss to Allatoona.
Douglas County is the No. 2 seed from Region 5-AAAAAA after defeating Alexander, 17-10, last week. Alexander enters the playoffs as the No. 4 seed and will take on Harrison on Friday.
Dalton leads the all-time series, 4-3, between the two teams, who haven’t met since 1973. Douglas County defeated then-No. 1 Dalton (13-6) on Dec. 4, 1964 for the Class AAA title on the road.
This season’s playoff berth is the program’s first under current coach Johnny White and first since the 2014 season. White, in his second season, has led the team to a 15-5 record.
