After opening the 2013 season with an eight game winning streak filled with enough memories to last a lifetime, the Landmark War Eagles have fallen short twice in as many weeks. This past Friday, Landmark lost to Eagles Landing Christian in the 2013 Region 5-A championship game by a score of 35-0.

In front of a huge crowd on hand to watch the regular season finale and honor the War Eagles Senior fall athletes, big plays by the visitors and some untimely mistakes and injuries ultimately ended the hopes for the 7th Region 5-A championship for Landmark since 2000.

Against what is arguably the toughest defense in the state in Single-A and arguably throughout football in the state of Georgia, the War Eagle offense was able to get their passing game going a little bit and put themselves in position to score some points before having turnovers due to fumbles or turnover on downs.

Sophomore quarterback Stockton McGuire continued his consistent play throughout the season as he completed 17 passes for 140 yards and added 31 yards rushing on the night.

It was only fitting that on Senior Night, the top target for McGuire ended up being senior wide receiver Austin Luckie who had a breakout game catching 5-of-17 passes against a stingy defense.

Defensively the War Eagles had a tough match up as the opponent was averaging over 40 points a game coming into the contest.

Landmark played solid defense and backed the Chargers into some big third down situations, but failed to make some stops that ended up leading to big plays or scores for the opposition.

Senior defensive back Nolan Bryant picked up another interception on the season when he picked off a ball at the goal line and returned it for 40 yards.

Senior linebacker William Higbie playing on one good knee and with his hand bubble wrapped after breaking it, but still managed to be the leading tackler on the night. Junior linebacker Titus Creamer along with sophomore outside linebacker Camden Cusumano and sophomore outside linebacker Joshua Cobb were also in the mix, stopping ball carriers all night.

The Region 5-A runner up will now wait on the release of the official playoff brackets Wednesday at 4 p.m. to see where the playoff march will begin.
