For only the third time in their GHSA existence, the No. 4 ranked Landmark War Eagles football team moved to 7-0 (3-0 Region 5-A) on the season after going on the road and soundly defeating the Strong Rock Patriots by a score of 34-12. The War Eagles jumped out to a 28-0 lead by halftime clicking on all cylinders offensively and defensively.
On the night, four different War Eagles offensive weapons found the end zone. On the ground it was a great effort by sophomore running back Cody Chastain who scored two rushing touchdowns in addition to racking up 110 yards on the ground on only 13 carries,running behind the physical offensive linemen for Landmark.
Senior linebacker, fullback William Higbie also added his second rushing touchdown of the season as he scored from two yards out.
Through the air it was sophomore quarterback Stockton McGuire who threw two TD passes and completed 12 passes for 210 yards. McGuire’s main recipients on the night were junior wide receiver Aaron Burtz who scored a 63 yard touchdown reception, and junior receiver Sam Dobbs, who caught nine passes for 119 yards and a TD.
The War Eagles defense didn’t look to miss a beat as they shut out the opponents in the first half before having some younger defenders go into the ball game and get some playing experience. Negative plays was the calling card for the aggressive bunch from Fairburn as they forced the option attack of Strong Rock into over 10 negative yardage plays on the night.
Junior defensive lineman Drew McMurrain was the leader in sacks and tackles for loss on the night while junior linebacker Titus Creamer and freshman defensive back Lofton Tidwell were the leading tacklers for the game.
This Friday night the Landmark War Eagles look to continue their unbeaten streak as they host Homecoming and their 25th anniversary against a very tough region foe in Pace Academy at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Thorn Stadium.
