The No. 7 ranked Landmark Christian School War Eagles kept right on rolling in front of a large Homecoming crowd as they defeated the visiting Mt Vernon Mustangs last Friday night, 56-21. The beautiful homecoming court rode in before the game on convertibles, but it was the War Eagle football team that put the pedal to the metal and never looked back after jumping out to a commanding 49-0 halftime lead. The win moved Landmark to 6-1 on the regular season and 1-0 in Region 5-A play.

For the second consecutive game, and third time this season, Landmark scored over 50 points and caused a running clock mercy rule in the second half of the game. Five different War Eagles scored for Landmark during the game. Senior Ben Baggett, junior Stockton McGuire, sophomore Lofton Tidwell, and sophomore Kyle Ferguson all scored rushing touchdowns, while Tidwell and sophomore Dylan Gabrielson caught touchdown passes from McGuire.

Tidwell, and all-purpose back, continued his impressive production of late as he contributed 196 total yards (145 rushing and 50 receiving) and three total touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. In the past two games, Tidwell has rushed for 540 yards and six touchdowns thanks to some dominating blocking from his offensive line and other skill positions.

Defensively, the first team War Eagle defense did not give up a first down in the first half and held the opponents to negative yards through the first 24 minutes of football. Seniors Titus Creamer and Drew McMurrain were the leading tacklers on the night for the stingy defense. Senior Aaron Burtz helped give Landmark great starting field position with two big kick-off returns in the second half as he played in his first home game since returning from an injury suffered in the pre-season scrimmage.

This upcoming week the War Eagles host region rival, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy. The visiting Chargers are fighting for their playoff lives after playing a very tough non-region schedule and entering the ballgame with a 1-6 record, while the War Eagles are looking to remain undefeated in Region 5-A and control their own destiny towards winning the region title and receiving an automatic playoff berth.
