Alexander opened the 2014-15 wrestling season with its annual Alexander Duals. The Cougars finished second, falling to Woodland in the championship match, 45-33.
“I was really excited because the teams were as competitive as I thought they would be,” said AHS coach Sean Moistner. “We showed some inexperience, we still had some football players out, and we have wrestlers competing out of weight class. Woodland is a team I think we can compete with later when January comes around.”
Alexander opened with a 70-12 victory over Hiram and followed with wins over LaGrange (72-12), Ola (52-26) and North Forsyth (36-30).
“These were the first matches of the season and at moments we looked good, and other times we showed we still needed to work on some things,” added coach Daryk Cochran. “It was a good start but we are not where we want to be yet, but we are not supposed to be at this time, this early in the season.”
Going undefeated for the Cougars at the Duals were Roman Boylen, Willie Dieckmann, Matt Beske and Muhammad Ansari.
Boylen continued his domination from last season, competing early on in the 152 pound division. He scored in the bonus in every match, including beating a two time state placer from Ola by major.
“He handled himself well, was aggressive, and scored points like you are supposed to,” Moistner said. “He set the example for the rest of the guys.”
Dieckmann, a transfer student, competed for the first time for Alexander and showed dominance in the 160 pound class. He did not give up a single point.
“We knew what we were getting and he looked good,” Moistner said. “He is really strong and does a good job keeping position and controlling on top.”
Beske continued to show his strength and improved in the neutral position in the 170 class. Ansari showed his flash in an undefeated performance at 182.
“Muhammad is not like Roman, who is always moving forward and is physical,” Moistner said. “He prefers to duck under and get the low single, and be a little more flashier than what most guys do. He does a good job for us.”
Logan Dasaro and Vinnie Ferrara stood out as freshmen. Dasaro went 4-1 and Ferrara was 3-2.
“Both did a great job in their first varsity action for us,” Moistner said. “What they don’t have technically right now, they make up for in hustle and hard work. As they get better technically throughout the season, it will compliment what they are doing right now by outworking their opponent.”
The Cougars will be back in action today in a head-to-head match with Berkmar on Senior Night tonight. They will compete at the Kennesaw Mountain Duals on Saturday.
