The Cougar wrestling team hosted their annual Senior Night match on Wednesday by welcoming Berkmar to Alexander High School. AHS dominated the visiting Patriots from Lilburn, winning 60-10.
Ten different Cougars grapplers picked up victories. Leading the group were seniors Bryce Hollomon (132-pounds), Kalib Daniel (138), Torrance Saunders (145), Roman Boylen (152), Willy Dieckmann (160), Matt Beske (170), Shane Hornsby (182) and Muhammad Ansari (195).
“Most of these guys have been in the program all four years,” said AHS coach Sean Moistner. “I am excited about how the big group has stay together this long.”
Boylen is a two time state champion and a three time finalist. He lost only one time last season to a two time state champion from South Carolina.
Hollomon is a two time state qualifier with over 100 career wins. He lost in the state placer match last season. Ansari is a returning sate placer, finishing fourth last season. He has a different style that is more flashy and helps him stand out on the mat.
Dieckmann is a transfer student from Kansas and a two time state placer. Daniel, Hornsby and Saunders are all new to the starting lineup this season.
Also picking up victories on Wednesday were Austin Starnes (113) and Vinnie Ferrara (120). Austin had a strong performance against his opponent from Berkmar in his return to the mat. Ferrara is a freshman, who comes directly from the club team and is expected to do well this season as he refines his technique.
Alexander will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to a tournament at Kennesaw Mountain High School. The Cougars will take two varsity squads and one JV squad to the meet. AHS will face some tough competition from the 6A class in Kennesaw Mountain, Valdosta and Roswell.
