Derrck Mahone/Douglas County Sentinel Douglas County center Lawrence Lagrone listens to his mother during Wednesday's National Signing Day ceremonies at the school. Lagrone, an all-state center, signed with North Carolina A&T.

Porcha Cook and her sister Sheia Cook will sit next to each other at this evening’s Alexander at Douglas County boys’ basketball game.

They will be rooting for opposite teams with a strong invested interest in both teams.

Porcha’s only son, Cam Copeland, is an all-region guard/forward for the Douglas County Tigers while Sheia’s son, Sidni White, is a starter for Alexander.

The teams play at 5:30 p.m. in the Region 5-AAAAAA Tournament semifinals with the winner advances to Saturday’s championship game.

“I will be cheering for my nephew, a little bit,” Porcha grinned. “You know I will be pulling for Cameron and his team.”

If this rivalry between the two teams wasn’t already intense, having family members on opposite sides makes it even more.

This will be the third time this season that the team’s have played each other with each winning on the road.

Both games went into overtime.

The winner gets bragging rights in the county and advance to the tournament championship game.

For Copeland and White, it will even more.

“It is always fun playing against Cam, and we want to beat each other,” White said. “It is tough because I know he will not show me any slack, and I’m not going easy on him. We are both going to put it all on the line.”

This was the first season that the two first cousins had played against each other.

Other than playing pickup ball against each other, they haven’t faced each other in organized basketball since they were playing youth ball. Those battles were likely intense since they were being coached by their mothers.

Sheia played four years at Lithia Springs and Porcha played one season at Douglas County but they never played against each other since they were in school at during time frame.

Porcha admits that Sheia was the better player.

When it comes to their sons, both Copeland and White have different styles.

Copeland has some gifted offensive skills while White is more defensive specialize. Each are electrified dunkers that can excite the crowd.

“They definitely respect each other’s game,” Porcha said. “Sidni is more aggressive on defense. Cam has some good offensive skills.”

Tonight that will be playing bragging rights and a shot at a championship.
