Preparations for this week’s games has been a challenge for teams.
Schools were cancelled Monday and Tuesday because of the threat of Hurricane Irma to the area.
Teams have two days to work on their game plans for Friday’s contest. Alexander is idle this week.
Here is a look at the upcoming games:
Whitewater at Chapel Hill: Both teams come into the contest with a 2-1 record after sustaining their first loss of the season. This is the last non-region game for Chapel Hill before opening its Region 5-AAAA schedule. The Wildcats loss 26-9 to upstart Banneker last week. Whitewater is averaging 261 yards on the ground with sophomore Miles Montgomery leading the way. He has rushed for 327 yards for a 109 per game average with three touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Maddox Mueller has rushed for 264 yards and a team-leading four touchdowns. He has also passed for 303 yards and a touchdown with four interceptions. Whitewater won last season’s only meeting between the schools.
South Paulding at Douglas County: The Spartans have struggled again this season with a 0-3 overall start and 0-1 in the region. South Paulding has scored only three touchdowns, all through the air, in the first three games. The combination of freshman Miles Campbell and sophomore Austin Seymour are averaging 83 yards passing. Campbell has thrown three touchdown passes on 30 attempts with one interception. Campbell is also the team’s leading rusher with 189 yards on 39 attempts. The Spartans must try to stop one of the top offenses in Class AAAAAA in Douglas County. Running back Uriah West leads Class AAAAAA with 591 yards for a 197-yard per game average. He also has five touchdowns. As a team, the Tigers are second in the classification with a 419 total yards per game average.
New Manchester vs. Mays: The Raiders opened defense of their region champion with a win at Langston Hughes last week. Mays only loss this season was a 9-0 setback to No. 3 Stockbridge to open the season. Coming off its first shutout win since 2015, New Manchester face a Mays offense that is living through the air. Raiders junior quarterback Jahquez Evans has passed for 525 yards and five touchdowns. The Raiders only average 74 yards per game on the ground. New Manchester seniors Vanquez Wheeler and A.J. Taylor have combined for 494 yards and five touchdowns on 92 carries. The Jaguars are averaging 183 yards per game for a 4.7 yards per carry average.
