Achieving new state long course qualifying times and national time standards were among the highlights for the Douglas County Stingray swimmers at the Swim with Dad Long-Course Meet last week.
Douglas County had three swimmers qualify for next month’s state meet while a couple of swimmers achieved National Reportable Times at the Steve Lundquist Aquatic Center in Jonesboro.
The team was paced by Emma Gwin, 10, who qualified for her first-ever state meet. She had a time of 1:52.66 in the 100 breaststroke event after knocking nearly five seconds off of her previous best time.
Gwin was less than two seconds away from qualifying in the 50 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle.
Swimmers have one last shot to make state qualifying times when the Stingrays travel to the Adamsville Natatorium to swim in the annual Urban Classic, which is hosted by the Atlanta Dolphins.
The 14-and-Under State Championships will be July 17-19 at Georgia Tech.
In addition to Gwin, the Moore brothers, Thomas and Jack, each qualified for an additional event. Thomas, 9, did the 100 breaststroke in 1:53.88 to qualify for his second state event. Jack, 7, had a time of 45.67 to qualify for the 50 back, giving him two state qualifying events.
“Again we had some great swimming in the midst of training for the state meet next month,” Stingrays coach Judy Prokopiak said. “The swimmers are still learning to pace themselves for long course races.”
Emily Meilus, Chloe Miller and Kamaria Mahone have already qualified for several events at the long-course championships, but they had notable performances in Jonesboro in the 12-and-under age division.
Meilus repeated her National Reportable Time in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:18.58 while Miller got her first NRT in the 50 butterfly. Miller had a time of 33.87 seconds for a personal-best time. Meilus finished third overall in the back and Miller was second in the butterfly event.
Mahone was 15th overall in the 50 butterfly, but dropped 0.96 to achieve an AAA time, her seventh AAA time since April.
The meet was sort of bittersweet for Emily Najar. It was her last long-course meet in the 10-and-under age group after celebrating a birthday a week later.
Najar left her mark in the 50 butterfly. She had a time of 35.02 seconds to finish fifth overall and reach an AAAA national time standard.
Prokopiak also noted that Kadeem LaFarge, Will Gay and Jenny and Sonny Nguyen had a good meet in their first long course meet.
“These first time long course swimmers did exceptionally well,” Prokopiak said.
