Douglas county swimmers were not very good hosts Saturday during the GRPA District 5 Swim Meet at Boundary Waters Aquatic Center.

Competing in 80 different divisions over five age groups, local swimmers won 22 events and held down almost a quarter of the top three positions, earning bids for the July 24-25 GRPA State Swim Meet in Carrollton.

“I can’t single out anybody,” said Judy Prokopiak, coach of the Douglas County Stingrays and most of the local swimmers. “It’s been a long hard summer swim season and it’s paid off. A lot of people set their best times and I think we’re going to be ready for the state meet.”

Local swimmers went on to break five records at the meet. The team of Kamaria Mahone, Chloe Miller, Emma Gwin and Makenzie Buck teamed up to break the record in the girls 9-10 100-yard freestyle relay in 55.80.

Mahone and Miller both set individual records as well. Mahone broke a 23-yard old record in the 25-yard breaststroke, winning the event in 16.79. Mahone rounded out her performance by winning the 25-yard backstroke (15.34).

Miller’s time of 13.89 broke the record in the 25-yard butterfly. Miller also took the crown in the 25-yard freestyle (13.46).

Jack Moore was the youngest member to break a record, snapping the old mark in the boys 7-8 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:28.81. Moore added the 25-yard backstroke title (20.08) to his list of accomplishments as well.

Jessie Crews added to his stellar career, breaking the boys 15-18 50-yard butterfly mark in 24.71.

There were several other repeat winners Saturday. Besides Moore, Mahone and Miller, Morgan Leahey, Kalie Whiddon and Evan Harte were two-time champions.

Leahey, competing in the girls 11-12 division, took the championship in both the 50-yard butterfly (31.71) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.16).

Whiddon’s titles in the 50-yard freestyle (29.02) and the 50-yard backstroke (33.82) occurred in the girls 11-12 age group.

Harte’s 50-yard breaststroke (30.95) and 100-yard individual medley (1:01.26) were top times in the boys 15-18 group.
