On Tuesday night, a train car carrying flammable butane gas derailed along Highway 78 near Tallapoosa.
According to Haralson County Fire Chief Brian Walker, the fire department responded to a 911 call from Norfolk Sourthern rail road company, who asked the department to remain on standby while they cleaned up the site.
“We did some air monitoring,” Walker said. “We basically stayed on the scene in case something happened, and once they got the tanker out of the way, we were relieved [from duty].”
Walker said there were no leaks caused by the derailment, and there was “no danger to the community at any time.”
The police temporarily closed Hwy. 78 until it was clear there was no danger of butane leaks, which according to the fire chief is a highly flammable gas.
Walker reported that the company had the site completely cleaned up by Thursday morning.
Norfolk Southern had not provided the news with a comment at the time of publication as to the cause of the accident.
