After a full day of questioning, a jury was selected for the case of one of nine young men accused of participating in a 2006 armed robbery in which a Carrollton woman was fatally shot. The trial will begin Friday, the defendant’s 18th birthday.
Varion “Snoopy” Shell is charged with two counts of murder, armed robbery, eight counts of aggravated assault, three counts of first-degree cruelty to children, possession of a gun or knife during the commission of a crime and possession of a pistol or revolver by a person under the age of 18.
Paolo Cabanas, 35, was shot and killed in front of three children she was babysitting, during an armed robbery allegedly committed by Shell and his codefendants on July 19, 2006. One of the children, Sabrina Montsivais, who was 9 at the time, was shot through the legs and survived. Cabanas’ brother-in-law, Pedro Espinosa, was shot in the leg and survived. Jorge Espinosa, Cabanas’ husband, was grazed by a bullet.
Shell’s trial was scheduled to begin Monday, but his attorney, Samuel Rael, was in a car accident and Superior Court Judge Dennis Blackmon delayed the trial until Thursday. Rael took over Shell’s case from Public Defender Jan Hankins on Oct. 31 and was denied a continuance the next day.
Shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, 10 men and two women were chosen to sit on Shell’s jury. A man and a woman were chosen as alternates.
