The Carrollton High School girls golf team captured first place at the Region 6-AAA Tournament on Monday at Cherokee Country Club in Cedartown.

The Lady Trojans, who are the defending Class AAA state champions, shot a 155. The second-place team, Cass, finished 35 strokes behind Carrollton with a 190. Both teams earn a spot at the state tournament, which the Lady Trojans won last season with a 183.

“The Cass coach even looked at our score and said, ‘Oh my God, your girls seem primed and ready for state,’” Carrollton coach Scott Morris said. “I knew we were going to play well going into this. Sure enough, even though we had all the strange weather conditions, they didn’t complain about it.”

Playing through the cold, rain and wind, the Lady Trojans dominated, scoring four of the top seven individual scores. Sarah Butts was the low-medalist with an even-par 73. The runner-up was Jordan Pence, who shot an 82.

Maggie Holmes had a 96 for Carrollton and Anna Schoerner shot a 97.

“This is the first time I’ve had a ladies team where all four players shot under 100,” Morris said. “There were four teams that didn’t have a lady shoot under 100.”

Haralson County finished fifth with a score of 205. Central came in seventh with a 230 and Villa Rica finished in eighth with a 281.

The girls state tournament will be held May 5 at Hawk’s Ridge Country Club.
