Bluefins excel at Southwest Divisionals

The Carrollton Bluefins hosted the Annual Southwest Divisional Meet at Lakeshore Natatorium this past weekend in a meet featuring 465 swimmers from eight teams.

Participating in the three-day competition were the Chattahoochee Gold, Columbus Hurricanes, Douglasville Stingrays, Southern Crescent Aquatics, Swim Macon, Troup County Sharks, Warner Robins Aquanauts and the Bluefins.

The Bluefins had multiple swimmers record top-three finishes.

Sam Anderson was first in the senior 50-yard breaststroke. Cade Crews finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke and first in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Jaxson Crews was third in the 8&U 25-yard freestyle; second in the 25-yard butterfly, 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly and 100-yard Individual Medley; and first in the 25-yard breaststroke and the 25-yard backstroke.

Joshua Grover was second in the 13-14 200-yard IM, senior 500-yard freestyle, senior 400-yard IM and 13–14 100-yard freestyle. Grover finished first in the 13–14 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Megan Hooper recorded a third-place finish in the 11-12 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Hooper was second in the 50-yard butterfly and first in the 50-yard backstroke.

Carolyn Ives came in third in the 13-14 100-yard backstroke, second in the 100-yard freestyle and first in the 50-yard freestyle.

Charlie Lanier finished second in the 8&U 25-yard freestyle. Matthew Leahey was third in the 8&U 25-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle. He was second in the 25-yard backstroke.

Ty Montemoino recorded a third-place finish in the 13-14 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle, and he was second in the 200-yard freestyle and first in the 50-yard freestyle.

Landon Odum finished second in the senior 100-yard breaststroke, and Adria Pierce recorded a third-place finish in the 8&U 25-yard butterfly.

Richard Russell was third in the senior 50-yard freestyle, second in the senior 100-yard backstroke and first in the senior 200-yard IM.

Makenzie Tanner finished third in the 8&U 25-yard backstroke.

Asher van Zanten was third in the 11-12 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM and 50-yard breaststroke, and he was first in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Five Bluefin swimmers made new state-qualifying times: Makenzie Buck in the 10&U 50-yard butterfly and the 100-yard butterfly; Katherine Denney in the 10&U 50-yard butterfly; Megan Hooper in the 11–12 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly; Sara Momtahan in the 10&U 100-yard butterfly; and Asher van Zanten in the 11–12 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard IM.

Those five will be swimming in the summer 14&U state meet at Georgia Tech, which runs July 16-18.

Asher van Zanten set a team record in the 11-12 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.84, breaking Joshua Grover’s 2007 mark of 1:15.79.
