William Stuart was charged Tuesday with one count of vehicular homicide and two counts of injury by vehicle in connection with an accident on Berea Road Saturday that killed a man and injured several others when an SUV crashed into a house.
DUI charges are pending final results of drug and alcohol tests, Douglas County District Attorney David McDade said.
George Bryant, 60, was killed when the Lincoln Navigator authorities said Stuart was driving left the roadway and plowed into the front of Bryant’s home while the family was seated in the living room watching television.
The family was celebrating the birthday of Bryant’s son, Michael, who had gone down the street to a cookout when the accident occurred.
Bryant’s wife and granddaughter were injured in the crash. His daughter and grandson were treated and released from WellStar Douglas.
Family members sat quietly in court as Stuart made his first appearance.
“It’s an incredibly awful crime for the victims to go through,” McDade said, adding that his concern is for the victims. “I can’t think of anything more horrible than sitting in your living room and have someone drive through your house like that.”
Attorney Frank Winn represented Stuart in court, but Stuart was told by Superior Court Judge Robert James that he could get a public defender if he is unable to obtain an attorney.
Based on the charges, James denied bond for Stuart.
“We certainly oppose bond at this time,” said McDade.
