Two Douglas County road projects, totaling $2.4 million, were among 25 Georgia federal stimulus funds projects awarded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) this week.
The local work includes:
• intersection improvements at the intersection of Kings Highway and Central Church Road, low bid awarded to R. J. Haynie and Associates, $695,599;
• and bridge replacement on Anneewakee Road at Anneewakee Creek, awarded to C. W. Matthews, $1,731,660.
All construction is being funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds and is due to start within 30-45 days, according to Randy Hulsey, director of Douglas County Department of Transportation (DOT).
“Douglas County worked with the state on the design of both projects and procured all rights of way and was designer of the Kings Highway and Central Church Road improvements,” Hulsey said Thursday.
The Kings Highway work will include the addition of turn lanes at all approaches and a traffic signal, he said. It has a 12-month build time.
The Anneewakee bridge replacement is expected to be completed in about 18 months, Hulsey said.
These awards are the beginning of GDOT’s Phase 2 of the stimulus program. A total of 109 highway stimulus projects, with a combined total of $287.7 million have been awarded since May. An additional $450 million will be awarded through the remainder of the year, according to Georgia Transportation Commissioner Vance C. Smith Jr.
“The federal stimulus money is a one-time proposition and we anticipate having committed all of Georgia’s stimulus funds to projects by January,” Smith said.
Nationwide, about $48 billion in stimulus funds are being invested in transportation infrastructure, including highways, public transit, high speed rail and aviation.
