A recount Tuesday of the ballots cast in last week’s Temple mayoral election upheld incumbent Rick Ford’s 3-vote victory over Lester Harmon, but the challenge could continue in Carroll County Superior Court.
Carroll County Elections Supervisor Patti Brown-Traylor and Election Board members held a recount because Ford’s margin of victory was less than 1 percent. The recount consisted of re-running through the votes on computer memory cards from election night, as well as the early voting memory card ballots that were cast in the Office of Elections and Registration.
Brown-Traylor had said prior to the recount that if there was a discrepancy it would likely be in the 29 paper absentee ballots that were mailed to her office, with possible errors caused by being run through the scanner at the wrong angle or the markings not being dark enough to be detected. But those results came out exactly the same as they did last week.
The results of the recount — 304 votes for Ford and 301 for Harmon — were recertified Tuesday.
“Since the results were basically done electronically except for the absentee ballots, I sort of expected no change (from the recount), but you just never know because anyone is subject to making an error,” Ford said. “I just want to thank Patti Brown and her people for their due diligence because the challenges and the recount have really put a burden on them and I appreciate their efforts.”
Harmon, a former Temple mayor who lost his seat to Ford four years ago, also said he wasn’t surprised at the results of the recount. In fact, he said his only surprise was that Ford didn’t pick up more votes.
“I actually expected him to pick up some after dealing with these people, but I’m well pleased that we only ended up with a 3-vote difference,” he said.
Harmon now has the option to officially challenge the election results in Carroll County Superior Court within five days. Since the fifth day is on Sunday, Brown-Traylor said the Office of the Secretary of State informed her the challenge window would be extended until Monday.
Harmon wouldn’t say for sure Tuesday whether he would file a challenge in Superior Court, only saying that he was “pretty sure” that would be his next move.
“We’re working on stuff (for a challenge) as we speak,” he said.
Ford said any further challenge by Harmon is out of his hands and he’ll treat it as a part of the election process.
“At this point in the process, I feel like the people of Temple have spoken and I would like to encourage Mr. Harmon and his supporters to work with us and let’s join hands to move the city of Temple forward,” he said.
Power is a dangerous thing for those who abuse it. This officer was fired and allegedly fired because he broke some policy about tampering with city equipment. He allegedly ran a cleaner on a computer with the chiefs permission and had a letter from the former chief stating he had told him to do it...talk about looking for a reason or being set up, then the tax payers had to pay the city attorney for the Mayor and Council to FIGHT giving this officer his unemployment. Its never enough for the city government to fire you they then seem to go for blood. Funny though how another officer did tamper with security by running GCIC and printing them out. (who knows the names that were run??)The director for the state GCIC even put in writing that this current officer breached security by printing secure information, this officer got a written reprimand nothing more while the police officer that Mayor Ford is on tape speaking to in such a degrading manner was allegedly fired for running a cleaner on a computer with his superiors permission. I saw these papers the proof that the comment below speaks about for myself, and seeing is believing. It was issues such as this that caused our council member to write a letter full of racial slurs and pass it out to black voters. They were so afraid of the truth coming out that the lie had to be big and wide spread. In the end the ones who suffer are the residents. Everything is political from lowering the flag the day Barry Lewis died with Ford standing out front for all to see to NOT lowering the flag on 9-11 until later in the day, probably after being reminded. How do you break promises, divide a town and then hold out an olive branch? As a resident I would be too fearful to reach for it for fear of being whacked upside the head with it.
Barry Lewis use to say "ole tricky ricky" it was humorous at the time, but now I see how prophetic is was. The best thing for the city of Temple would be to be annexed into Carroll County. I wonder if any one knows how to go about getting this done??
I say hold another election, I don't think Temple got the best man
