U.S. Rep. David Scott will come to Douglasville Feb. 1 for an update on the Ga. Highway 92 relocation project.

Scott’s visit, hosted by the city, will begin at 9 a.m. in the Downtown Conference Center, located at 6701 Church Street Douglasville.

Scott has been critical in helping the city keep the project — which has been ongoing for more than 20 years — a major priority, according to Marcia Hampton, community and downtown services director for the city.

“After hearing from the citizens during his visit to Douglasville in Aug. 2009, Congressman Scott charged all parties involved with a mission of expediting this project,” Hampton said.

The city held a series of meetings with the public to gather comments about the project following that visit.

City staffers and project consultants, along with representatives from Croy Engineering and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) were all on hand to answer questions from the public about the project. The information gathered was used as a critical piece in developing a draft mitigation plan for the project, which was on display Oct. 27 at a Public Information Open House (PIOH) at Stewart Middle School, Hampton said.

The PIOH is a required step in the process, she said, and citizens attending it were given the opportunity to voice their opinion about the project and the items listed in the draft mitigation plan.

“Now that all of the comments have been received, all parties involved have been working to move this project to the next phase,” Hampton said.

On Monday, Scott will receive a briefing from the city, Croy Engineering, GDOT and the Federal Highway Administration on their progress with this project. Key stakeholders — citizens chosen based on their involvement and connection to the community — will also report, Hampton said.

“This project may be the largest transportation project the City of Douglasville will ever see and it is critical for traffic relief, safety and accessibility for our Northside residents”, says Councilwoman LaShun Burr-Danley,
