As D.J. Avery told the gathering of his peers and teachers in the school’s gymnasium that he has decided to play football at Dartmouth College, he held a large photo of Catrenia Harvey, his late mother.

When Efe Balfour decided to attend Bridgewater College to play basketball, he set his sites on being an immediate contributor.
I wanted to take space in my column to remember for the passing of one of my best friends and teaching mentor, Pete Prickett, who died last month after a long and courageous battle against cancer.
On a night where they honored their seniors the Lithia Springs girls basketball team made it a point to start strong against visiting East Paulding and used that early momentum to cruise to a 68-35 win Tuesday night.

With a little under a minute to play, Chapel Hill coach Chris Long shouted to his team to slow down.
With Lithia Springs content to hold the ball for the last shot in a tie game, it seemed that the only chance New Manchester would have to come out with a win would be in overtime.

Josh Thruston has gotten use to the public address announcer at the Douglas County Swim Championships calling his name as the event winner.
When Alexander wrestlers failed to qualify for the Class AAAAA duals championships earlier this month, they took it personal.
The water doesn’t seem as deep now and it is far less intimidating as it was 11 years ago.

Deesha Brefford was glad to get a personal milestone out of the way so she can fully concentrate on one of New Manchester’s biggest team goals for this season.
Listening to coach David Mills’ words at halftime, the Lithia Springs girls basketball team clawed its way back in a back-and-forth game at Region 5-AAAAA rival Chapel Hill and used a second-half surge to pull away for good on its way to a 71-58 win.
By now everybody knows that Ashley Morgan was a dominating player in softball this past season.
Nobody would have questioned Ashley Morgan if she would have sat out the last third of the softball season.

In picking up its fourth straight win, the Chapel Hill Panthers erased a 13-point halftime deficit to visiting South Paulding Saturday and eked out a 63-62 win.
New Manchester had Hiram just where it wanted it for the first two quarters of Saturday’s Region 5-AAAAA home game.
Even though it is two months into its season, the Lithia Springs boys basketball team hasn’t had its full roster for any game.
